Bengali poet slams Krushna Abhishek for Tagore joke on Kapil’s Show

Comedian-actor Krushna Abhishek landed into trouble after he was accused of mocking Rabindranath Tagore in The Great Indian Kapil Show. In the midst of his remarks, Bengali poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay expressed his disapproval of the actor-comedian. Bandyopadhyay wrote a lengthy note criticising Krushna, accusing him of disrespecting Tagore.
Srijato, in his post, also emphasised that there is a distinct line between comedy and mockery.
“There is a thin line between humour and mockery, and crossing it can prove to be risky. Often, people disregard whom they are joking about, what they are saying, and how far they go — all in a bid to chase high ratings and make people laugh. They forget where to draw the line (sic),” the poet wrote.

He further wrote, “The sarcastic gestures and conversations of Krushna Abhishek with the song Ekla Cholo Re has gone far beyond the level of respect and modesty, at least in my eyes. I am sure they wouldn’t have the courage to make such ugly jokes about Ghalib, Kabir, or Premchand. The show would be forced to shut shop the next day. Bengalis are used to such stereotypical jokes, and thus, they could crack these jokes. And that too in front of a Bengali actress (Kajol) who sat and laughed through the skit,”
Srijato even demanded a public apology for his joke. “I don’t know who will support me, but I am expressing my protest and on behalf of The Great Indian Kapil Show and I demand a public apology. At the same time, there was a demand to re-edit that part of the said episode. These days it doesn’t take more than seven seconds for news to reach. I kept the seven-day limit, politely. And yes, I am writing this post in consultation with one of the best lawyers in the related field (sic).”
Earlier, after several reports suggested that Salman Khan’s production house, SKTV, had been served with a legal notice regarding the same, the actor’s team refuted these claims and issued a statement to clarify their non-involvement. The Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation issued the notice. It was sent on behalf of Dr Mondal and represented by legal advisor Nripendra Krishna Roy.
