The legendary Wayans brothers will reunite to pen the script for the upcoming “Scary Movie 6,” thus making it the first time the comedic troupe has worked together on the parody film franchise in over two decades.
The brothers: Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans have all been confirmed to be writers for “Scary Movie 6,” which was announced in April at CinemaCon. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film globally through its first-look deal with producer, Miramax, which distributed the first three movies, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise,” Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman said in a statement obtained by the outlet. “The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
USA TODAY contacted Miramax on Tuesday but has not received a response.
The original “Scary Movie” hit theaters in July 2000 and four sequels followed thereafter. According to IMDB, Kennen Ivory Wayans directed the first two installments of the franchise, while Marlon and Shawn Wayans wrote for all five of the films and starred in two of them.

Marlon Wayans confirmed the news Tuesday in an X post saying, “WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”
Shawn Wayans shared the same caption in an Instagram post on Tuesday, tagging his brothers Marlon and Keenan Wayans.
“Scary Movie,” which opened with $42 million at the domestic box office, includes parodies of several movies from “Scream,” “The Sixth Sense,” “The Matrix,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Blair Witch Project.” The other four movies follow a similar format.
The new film is scheduled to begin shooting before its tentative 2025 release, according to the Hollywood Reporter. A director and exact release date has not been announced, the outlet said.
The plot or cast of the film also has not been announced, and it is unclear if actors Anna Farris or Regina Hall will return to their star roles as Cindy and Brenda. None of the Wayans brothers have confirmed if they would make an appearance or star in the film.
